UN Event: Agriculture, Farming, and Food Security & Peaceful and Inclusive Societies
United Nations Workshop on Agriculture, Farming and Food Security: Peaceful and Inclusive Communities took place at United Nations Headquarters on 3 October – Featuring Vermont Experiences, Insight and Practices.
Vermont (October 17, 2019) With the Permanent Missions of Iraq and Honduras to the United Nations; UN Women; International Institute for Democracy Electoral Assistance (IDEA); Yale Divinity School; and, Initiative for Governance, Reconciliation, Agriculture and Coexistence (Grace Initiative Global), a Vermont based non-profit developed and organized the event. The workshop highlighted Vermont expertise, experience and personal reflections on sustainable farming and food security, taking into account the United Nations resolutions on agriculture and food security, the Decade for Family Farming and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This workshop laid the foundation for the launching of a forthcoming retreat in Vermont on Farming, Food Security and Coexistence.
Experts from Biological Capital and Philo Ridge, (Charlotte) and University of Vermont, Extension Program for soil and agronomy delivered highly engaging and insightful presentations that combined technical information with personal reflections on matters ranging from regenerative agriculture to dairy farming. Representatives from Merck Forest and Farmland (Rupert) and Vermont Farmers’ Food Center (Rutland) also took part in the event, and discussed the issues of forest management and the links between Community Supported Agriculture and health care, respectively.
